About Bahía de los Ángeles Protected Area

Bahía de los Ángeles Protected Area is located on the eastern shore of the Baja California Peninsula along the Gulf of California. This protected zone encompasses diverse ecosystems including desert landscapes, rugged mountain ranges, and a biologically rich marine environment centered around the bay itself. The area is celebrated for its remarkable biodiversity, featuring a mix of endemic desert flora and fauna as well as vibrant marine life such as whale sharks, sea lions, dolphins, and numerous fish species. The bay is an internationally recognized site for marine conservation due to its critical role as a nursery and feeding ground for several species of fish and marine mammals. Historically, the area was inhabited by the indigenous Cochimi people and later became a quiet fishing village, retaining much of its natural charm and low-impact development. Outdoor enthusiasts visit the bay to engage in snorkeling among colorful reefs and schools of fish, sport fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching, particularly spotting migratory species and shorebirds. On land, hiking and exploring the nearby desert formations provide stunning contrast and scenic vistas, while access to Isla Ángel de la Guarda—the largest island in the gulf—is possible for experienced adventurers. The relatively remote location and low population density help preserve the pristine quality of both land and sea environments. Visitors are drawn by the tranquil atmosphere, abundant wildlife, and excellent opportunities to experience one of the Gulf of California’s outstanding natural laboratories.
